Human Equivalent

12th Mar 2009

April is going to be a VERY busy time for my band, Human Equivalent. We’re recording our next big album in NYC (more on that soon) and will doing a few shows. One show that I really want to tell you about is a Fundraiser that my friend is putting together as her final project for her Degree. It’s on Tuesday 7th April, at All Asia, Cambridge MA, at 9.30pm. The Fundraiser is for Diabetes Research, an important issue for my friend and, having been diagnosed with PCOS a couple of years ago myself, a very relevant issue for me too. So, for any of you in the Boston area next month, please come and hear some awesome music and support a good cause! More funding needs to go towards awareness of and research into Diabetes and related illnesses, so if you come and donate, I’ll personally give you a big hug 😉

Patrick Kunka Quartet

12th Mar 2009

Patrick Kunka, drummer and composer, is a force to be reckoned with. Started a year ago, the Patrick Kunka Quartet consists of Alan Benzie on piano, Dylan Coleman on bass, myself on alto and soprano saxes and Patrick on the drums. Inspired by the mind-bending forces of Indian rhythms, complex modal structures and some nasty grooves, Patrick has created something very special. We spent two days in the studio in February recording his most recent album ‘The Edge’ and we are quickly reaching the finish line with its production. The PKQuartet will be touring this coming August, around Scotland and Northern England, gigging and doing a clinic or two for local schools (an idea I’m very enthusiastic about), to promote live music and education in jazz and improvised music generally. Please watch the site for all the dates we’ll be playing and we hope to see you around in August! Check out the group’s MySpace page: www.myspace.com/patrickkunkaquartet

California Dreaming

12th Mar 2009

Weather in Boston: Wet, Hot as Hell Humidity!!!, SNOW STORM, Wet, Hot as Hell Humidity!!!, SNOW STORM, Wet… Yep, this is your typical New England Spring time! I must admit, the weather does wonders if youre looking to plumb your creative depths, but sometimes, I could just do with a good dose of sunshine and clear skies. So, I am very fortunate to be going on another Berklee Scholarship Audition Tour this Spring to…. beautiful L.A.!! From April 2nd-5th, I will be helping to prep prospective students for their entering audition and telling them and their parents a little about life at Berklee. If you’ll be in the area and thinking of auditioning, I’ll see you there! If you are at all interested in Berklee and applying to study there, no matter where you’re from or who you are, please check out the official website: www.berklee.edu

Birds in the Woods

12th Mar 2009

At the beginning of March, I got the opportunity to be a part of Singer/Songwriter band ‘Birds in The Woods’. I’m playing as part of the horn section (which is actually a nice break from being front and center), and, at the beginning of March, we recorded the band’s album at Cambridgeside’s Moontower Studios. George Woods and Sue Buzzard (the leaders and partners in crime of the group) have been working really hard with touring and gigging, now playing regularly in various venues in Boston and NYC. The music itself is an interesting blend of folk/singer-songwriter, jazz and funk, and has been getting a lot of great exposure through college radio stations and George’s unique promotional style (want some tips on promoting your band, talk to George!). Check out their fun and awesome website: Birds in the Woods.

Salsa!

12th Mar 2009

I am currently playing with the Salsa Band ‘Son De Boston’ run by Berklee Professor and piano player Rich Grudzinski, which has done various gigs at night clubs and dance venues in the Boston area. The band is great, the nights are fun (and hot!), so if you ever feel like getting down and soaking up those latin vibes and participating in some of the best dancing in the north-east, check out the group’s MySpace page: Son de Boston.

Helen Sherrah-Davies release

12th Mar 2009

Well, this semester has turned out to be a busy one, much of it in the recording studio. In the Fall of 2008, I had the great honor of playing on violinist Helen Sherrah-Davies’ album, a fantastic musician and friend. Her work is a fusion of Jazz, Funk, Rock, and Traditional styles, with “odd times”, all placed perfectly together to create some of the most interesting music I’ve had the pleasure of playing on and listening to. ‘Steps Ahead’ guitarist Bryan Baker, master-harpist and vocalist Maeve Gilchrist and virtuoso pianist Manami Morita were also featured on the album. The final completion of the album is drawing near and we are looking to have a C.D. release party very soon! But before that, please check out Helen’s MySpace page, where you’ll be able to find some of her many little creative gems.
